| I spent about three weeks in Greece between late November and early December, 2024. Looking back, I am so happy I went when I went. Greece is an incredibly popular tourist destination, but not so much in the winter. Being there when it was “cold” (I had to wear a sweater occasionally) meant that there were not many tourists to deal with. This was especially great on Santorini, which, from what I've read, can be a nightmare in peak tourist season. Athens was great, Meteora was one of the most pleasant surprises of my career as a photographer, and the three islands I visited (Crete, Santorini, and Naxos) each had their own vibe, and each was excellent. There are something like 1,000 (exaggeration? I dunno.) Greek Islands, and I'm sure I would have had a great time on any of them, but I loved the ones I did have the privilege of enjoying. One little final note – I used to call myself a “nature photographer,” but have started calling myself a “travel photographer” since 2020(ish), and Greece is exactly why – it has an incredible mixture of nature and historical / architectural / cultural photo spots that can't be captured by someone who only shoots nature. Greece. Amazing! |
