My being in Death Valley National Park, in Eastern California, at the exact time that one of the best wildflower blooms in many years occurred was a complete accident. Death Valley is usually completely devoid of life, but heavy rains earlier in the year allowed for a short-lived bloom of many types of wildflowers in what is usually one of the driest places on the planet.
