This is a photo of Bruarfoss, which is located a couple hours from Reykjavik, Iceland. I hiked here on my January, 2023 visit to this beautiful island nation, and while I had read that the water is very blue, I was not ready for it to be as blue as it turned out to be. I made the hike in the hour or two before sunrise, and it was a little cold, but seeing this location with no one else around made the mild discomfort worth it! Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B):12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48, 80x54, 90x60.

I visited Iceland in the fall of 2017, and almost drove around the perimeter of the entire island. However, extraordinarily heavy and sustained rain caused flooding which closed the road - yes, there is literally only one - in the northeast of the island, so I had to backtrack all the way around the island. This cost me a day, and meant I did not get to see Vesturhorn, shown here. When I returned to Iceland in January, 2023, in order to photograph ice caves, I knew I needed to give Vesturhorn another try. One nice thing about winter photography this far north is that daylight hours are short, so while this photo was taken at sunrise, it was probably almost noon! What a crazy spot! Super jagged mountains rising almost directly from a black sand beach. I don't know if there is anywhere else quite like this on Earth. Available in the following sizes (Panorama C): 30x10, 36x12, 48x16, 60x20, 72x24, 90x30, 90x30 Triptych (3 x 30x30), 108x36, 108x36 Triptych (3 x 36x36), 120x40, 120x40 Triptych Triptych (3 x 40x40), 144x48 Triptych (3 x 48x48), 162x54 Triptych (3 x 54x54), 180x60 Triptych (3 x 60x60).

In January, 2023, I visited Iceland with the goal of photographing an ice cave at the foot of Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier. Not being an expert mountaineer, I elected to hire a private guide to get me to Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, and since I was already halfway around the world, I decided to get a second day in which I told my guide I'm a photographer and am basically just looking to find some beautiful, semi-secret spots. He took me to Heinabergsjökull lagoon, and walking on what is essentially a frozen lake was one of the scariest things I've ever done. Occasionally the ice would crack and freak me out. My guide assured me we were safe, and the payoff was this photo, taken from a “cave” inside a big iceberg on the frozen surface of the lagoon. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle A): 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 20x24, 24x30, 30x40, 40x50, 48x60.

At some point early in my photography career, I stumbled across a couple photos of an ice cave, and loved them. I knew I needed to get my own shots of an ice cave. Then a decade passed and I hadn't done it. Iceland is one of not too many places where a photo like this can be taken, and in early 2023, I flew from Japan (where I was temporarily living) to Iceland specifically to get some ice cave photos. I got quite a few, and I love all of them. This photo, as abstract and weird as it is, is the ceiling of Breiðamerkurjökull, a glacier in southern Iceland. Flying halfway around the world to take one photo seems a bit silly when I think about it, but I don't know how else I could have done it. What a blast! At some point early in my photography career, I stumbled across a couple photos of an ice cave, and loved them. I knew I needed to get my own shots of an ice cave. Then a decade passed and I hadn't gotten around to it, largely because there are not a ton of places (or times) where one can walk into a glacial cave. Iceland is one of a small number of places where this can safely be done, and in early 2023, I flew from Japan (where I was temporarily living) to Iceland specifically to get some ice cave photos. This particular glacier is called Breiðamerkurjökull, and is in southern Iceland. I'm happy to report that I ended up getting quite a few nice photos. Flying halfway around the world to take one photos certainly one of the strangest things I've ever done, but it paid off. What a blast! I visited Hiroshima on a semester abroad program called Semester-at-Sea in 2005. Obviously, I went to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial on this visit. During my visit in 2022-23, however, I was not feeling prepared to deal with the sadness of seeing that again, so I went somewhere prettier – the rebuilt Hiroshima Castle. And guess what, it is quite pretty! Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, 30x45, 40x60, 48x72.

The Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, in Kyoto, is one of the most popular spots for photographers in all of Japan, and for good reason. I visited the location twice in the fall of 2023, and this photo was taken on my second visit. I took more traditional photos of the same location on both occasions, but as sometimes happens, I learned a few things on my first visit that I was able to apply in order to make the photos from my second visit, one week later, even better. If you make it to Kyoto and hope to get a photo like this, I have a bit of advice: arrive early. Like, uncomfortably early. Worth it though! Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, 30x45, 40x60.
I'd seen photos of a beautiful “floating” torii gate before visiting Japan, and knew I needed a photo. The famous floating torii gate is called Itsukushima, and it is located about 10 miles southwest of Hiroshima. This photo is not of Itsukushima. I read somewhere online about Shirahige Shrine, a “secret” floating torii gate, and that's what you are looking at. There's really no easy way to get here as a tourist. I took a train to the closest station, and then trudged along the side of a fairly busy highway for about half an hour to reach the location from which this shot was taken. This photo was actually taken on my second visit to the torii gate. My visit a week earlier was beautiful in a different way – it was very gray and dreary – but I knew I wanted a nice sunset, so I came back, and I sure picked the right evening to do so. Wow, those clouds and distant shoreline are just about perfect. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48.

Matsumoto City, which lies less than 50 miles southwest of Nagano, was, for me, a surprise highlight of Japan, and Matsumoto Castle was the highlight of Matsumoto City. Originally built in the late 1500s, it, like most historic locations in Japan, has been burned down and rebuilt, and is today considered one of Japan's three premier historic castles (along with Himeji and Kumamoto). Due to its black exterior, it is also known as the “Crow Castle.” Aside from all the history, this castle is just pretty. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, 30x45, 40x60, 48x72.

Katsuo-ji is another beautiful temple that is a bit difficult to reach as a tourist. It is several miles from Osaka, the nearest city, and public transit, which is fantastic in Japan, only comes and goes here rarely. But visiting is worth the hassle, and the density of the crowds, in my experience, seems to align with the difficulty of making it here. First constructed in 765, it, like many (most?) Japanese historic sites, has burned down and been reconstructed, and has its own unique flavor. Although this temple is most well-known for its daruma dolls, which are meant to bring good luck to those who purchase them, this photo focuses more on the beauty of the temple itself. But look closely enough, and you'll fine a daruma or two (or probably a few hundred).
