RECENTLY UPDATED - Wyoming
A huge portion of Wyoming is nothing but barren, wind-swept prairies. But it's also home to some of the most majestic mountain scenery in North America. When living in Colorado, I try to visit Wyoming at least once or twice a year. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are probably the most widely-known destinations in the state, and for good reason. Wildlife is prolific in both of these National Parks.
I attended an art show in Jackson, Wyoming, in June, 2022. The show happened to take place the week after the worst flooding Yellowstone National Park (an hour north) had experienced since people began tracking such things. Suffice to say, there was a lot of rain, and the skies were mostly to completely filled with clouds for the duration of my time there. Unable to get the bright and saturated sunset clouds that occupy so much of my typical photography, I shot this barn, in the Mormon Row portion of Grand Teton National Park, in these much more subdued conditions. It turns out this location is beautiful regardless of the weather! Available in the following sizes (Panorama C): 30x10, 36x12, 48x16, 60x20, 72x24, 90x30, 90x30 Triptych (3 x 30x30), 108x36, 108x36 Triptych (3 x 36x36), 120x40, 120x40 Triptych Triptych (3 x 40x40), 144x48 Triptych (3 x 48x48), 162x54 Triptych (3 x 54x54), 180x60 Triptych (3 x 60x60).
A spontaneous trip to Glacier National Park in the summer of 2020 took me through some parts of Wyoming and Montana that I'd never seen before, including the “Hell's Half Acre” roadside stop. Kind of in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming, it is a great place to get out and stretch one's legs, and perhaps have a snack or some lunch. This place looks strikingly like the more famous Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Check out my images from there and see if you can tell them apart! Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48.

I've been meaning to shoot some images from the Beartooth Highway, on the Wyoming / Montana border, for years. A spontaneous trip to Glacier National Park during the summer of 2020 proved the perfect opportunity to do so. I camped half an hour or so from where I took this photo on my way to Glacier, but missed sunrise at this particular location, so I camped much closer on my return journey. The Beartooth Highway is definitely one of my favorite drives in the US, and with scenes like this doing a fair job of presenting much of what the area looks like, it is easy to understand why. Available in the following sizes (Panorama B): 30x12, 40x16, 50x20, 60x24, 75x30, 75x30 Triptych (3 x 25x30), 90x36, 90x36 Triptych (3 x 30x36), 105x42, 105x42 Triptych (3 x 35x42), 120x48, 120x48 Triptych (3 x 40x48), 135x54 Triptych (3 x 45x54), 150x60 Triptych (3 x 50x60).

During the summer of 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I went up to Medicine Bow National Forest in southern Wyoming, only a few hours from my home in Northern Colorado. Snowy Range Road travels to the west from Laramie, and passes through this National Forest that, in addition to being great for fishing and camping, also has a small area with dozens of easily-accessible alpine lakes. Lake Marie, shown here, and photographed at sunrise, is one of the most accessible – it was a 5 minute walk from the parking lot for me to access this location. This photo, like the location and the camping trip itself, was and is a great escape from the stresses of everyday life in 2020. Bald eagles are one of my favorite wildlife recovery stories. In a world filled with constant news of new animals being put on the endangered list, or going outright extinct, it is nice to see that human policy can have a positive impact and bring a population of animals back from the edge of extinction. I took this photo in Yellowstone National Park. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B):12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48.
Not a difficult bird to photograph, but a beautiful one nonetheless. I shot this house finch just outside of Yellowstone National Park in the dead of winter. I have no idea how an animal so small manages to stay warm when the temperatures dip down to negative twenty and colder, but somehow, they manage. Available in the following sizes (Square): 10x10, 12x12, 16x16, 20x20, 24x24, 30x30, 36x36, 42x42, 48x48.
I took this photo in Yellowstone National Park in early 2020, and the thermometer in the car I arrived in read twenty degrees below zero. The coldest place I've ever been … yet. But I was dressed appropriately and felt plenty warm. I guess this big bison did, too. He seemed unfazed by the cold. Bison are fun animals to photograph any time of year, but there's something special about shooting them in the winter with a snowy background. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle A): 10x8, 14x11, 20x16, 24x20, 30x24, 40x30, 50x40, 60x48, 75x60.

Yellowstone National Park is a wonderful place to visit any time of year. My first winter visit to Yellowstone was in early 2020, and it has a completely different feel (literally and figuratively) than a spring, summer, or fall visit. There are still plenty of animals to see, such as this red fox I found in the Lamar Valley. I was one of a dozen or so photographers that spent a while photographing him as he ran back and forth across the road, hunting for and catching what must have been an entire family of some small rodents. The orange and black of his fur is simply breathtaking composed with the white background. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40.

My first winter visit to Yellowstone was in early 2020, and it has a completely different feel (literally and figuratively) than a spring, summer, or fall visit. Although there is a lot of animal activity, resulting in surprisingly few fields of snow untouched by footprints, I spotted this dead tree in one such spot, and found the simple composition shown here to be quite pleasing. Mammoth Hot Springs, in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, is constantly changing. There are different springs bubbling, and different colors visible, each time I come here. I took this photo in early 2020, and if I were to return to the same place from which I took this photo a year later, while I'm sure it would look similar, I'm guessing it would be different. I love the colors and structures the strange chemicals found in the hot springs create at Mammoth! My first winter visit to Yellowstone was in early 2020, and it has a completely different feel (literally and figuratively) than a spring, summer, or fall visit. I took this photo in northwest Yellowstone shortly before sunrise. The thermometer in the car I arrived in read something like 15 degrees below zero. Yeah, just a bit cold. This is a shot that I've been wanting to get for a while. Two Ocean Mountain lies in the heart of Shoshone National Forest, just east of Grand Teton National Park, in northwest Wyoming. There's a section in Shoshone National Forest where a small Forest Service Road shoots off the main highway, and snakes through a bit of marshy land. There are a few small ponds and lakes here which are perfect for getting reflection shots, but unfortunately, they attract lots of mosquitoes. So, while this picture may be simply beautiful, capturing it was a different story. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48.
