By 2022, I'd shot most of the big, famous photo locations throughout Utah. But there is so much beautiful public land in this spectacular state, that it would take a lifetime to see everything. I was driving through in the spring of 2022, and wanted to explore some less well-known locations. I'd seen photos online of “Zebra Slot,” and after some quick research, off I went, in the middle of the day, to check it out. Pro tip: landscapes generally look their best (or at least most dramatic) at sunrise and / or sunset, but canyons – and slot canyons especially – look best in the middle of the day. The scale of the canyon is a bit difficult to make out from this photo, but I'll say that I'm glad I am pretty thin. Getting to the end of the slot required me to turn sideways and shimmy along, scraping my tripod and cameras on the rock walls along the way. But it was all worth it, because I simply love the photos I got here. Available in the following sizes (Panorama A): 10x20, 12x24, 16x32, 20x40, 24x48, 30x60, 30x60 Triptych (3 x 30x20), 36x72, 36x72 Triptych (3 x 36x24), 40x80, 40x80 Triptych (3 x 40x27), 48x96, 48x96 Triptych (3 x 48x32).

I took this photo on one of the least driven roads I've ever had the pleasure of exploring. Capitol Reef National Park, in south central Utah, is already in the middle of nowhere, but most visitors to Capitol Reef only see the portion of it that is accessible by paved road. I stumbled upon a dirt road that allows one access to the extremely isolated southern portion of the park during a Nevada / Utah trip in 2020, and I'm happy to report it is spectacular. But don't tell anyone, I don't want the secret getting out! Available in the following sizes (Panorama C): 30x10, 36x12, 48x16, 60x20, 72x24, 90x30, 90x30 Triptych (3 x 30x30), 108x36, 108x36 Triptych (3 x 36x36), 120x40, 120x40 Triptych Triptych (3 x 40x40), 144x48 Triptych (3 x 48x48), 162x54 Triptych (3 x 54x54), 180x60 Triptych (3 x 60x60).

I've taken a lot of scenic drives, but to this day, Utah 12 remains in my top two (the other is Canada's Icefields Parkway). Beginning near Bryce Canyon National Park and continuing 123 miles before finishing near Capitol Reef National Park, it goes through some of the least densely populated parts of the country, and offers about a billion side trips, parks (National, State etc.) and views. I've driven Utah 12 probably five or so times, and it seems that each time, I find somewhere new to explore. Such was the case when I drove it in mid 2020, and stumbled upon a side road called the Burr Trail, which connects Boulder, Utah, to the southern portion of Capitol Reef National Park. It was on this road that I got this photo. I don't want to spoil it any more. It's a beautiful drive. Macro photography can be a lot of fun. Walking around with a macro lens makes one think about his or her surroundings in a different way. A leaf or pebble that might otherwise not catch ones attention can suddenly become the most interesting thing in the world. And flowers are always interesting, but they become even more so when viewed through a macro lens. Details one may otherwise never notice are suddenly huge. This flower was blooming on a cactus. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40.

Somewhere near the halfway point, there's a pull off that I stop at every time I go on this drive, and it is from this pull off that I took this photo. It does a great job of giving one a general idea of what there is to see along this drive. Do yourself a favor – if you can find the time to drive Utah State Highway 12, do it! I've visited Zion many times, and it is always beautiful. I took this photo while visiting the park during the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-2020, while major portions of the park remained closed. This also meant less visitors than usual, but not by as big a margin as I would have imagined. A bridge goes over the Virgin River, and it is a famous spot for photography, but I believe they stopped allowing people to shoot from the bridge recently – I only found out after I'd taken this photo, and a Park Ranger drove by and informed me (and some other photographers) that pedestrians aren't allowed on the bridge. Bummer! Oh well, at least I got the shot. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48, 80x54.
My favorite views of Southwest Utah's Bryce Canyon National Park are from the south, at Inspiration Point, and Bryce Point. When I came to visit in late February, 2019, the park was buried under far more snow than is typical, and both of these viewpoints were, at least when I arrived, closed. By my second morning in the park, though, Bryce Point was made reachable, and it was from here that I captured this image, shortly after sunrise. Available in the following sizes (Panorama B): 30x12, 40x16, 50x20, 60x24, 75x30, 75x30 Triptych (3 x 25x30), 90x36, 90x36 Triptych (3 x 30x36), 105x42, 105x42 Triptych (3 x 35x42), 120x48, 120x48 Triptych (3 x 40x48), 135x54 Triptych (3 x 45x54), 150x60 Triptych (3 x 50x60).

By my second morning in the park, though, Bryce Point was made reachable, and I made it a point to arrive here well before sunrise. I took this photo shortly before the sun came up, and used a long enough exposure to capture the light necessary to see what the park looks like when illuminated primarily by moonlight. By the time I finished shooting here, my fingers were getting numb, but with a capture like this one, it was well worth it. When I came to visit in late February, 2019, the park was buried under far more snow than is typical, and both of these viewpoints were, at least when I arrived, closed. But the National Parks employees came through, and cleared enough snow that they were both soon made reachable . I took this photo from Inspiration Point, as the sun set off-camera. The setting sun did manage to light the clouds to the west up with a vibrant pink light, which offset the blues, oranges, and whites elsewhere in the photo perfectly. During the winter of 2019, I was an artist at the Arizona Fine Art Expo, in Scottsdale, Arizona. In mid- to late February, I kept reading about an epic amount of snow that was falling in southwest Utah, and Bryce Canyon National Park, in particular. Being only an eight-hour drive away, I decided to take a couple days off work to go see this once in a decade (lifetime?) event. Bryce Canyon really lends itself to panoramas, but it seemed a good idea to get some more standard-shaped photos while these unusual conditions persisted, so for this photo, I zoomed in to the east-facing canyon wall as the rising sun first began to illuminate it with warm light. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48.

This panoramic photo, taken at sunrise, was the first I saw of the park, since I'd arrived after dark, the night before. Needless to say, the drive proved well worth it, and I was able to spend another day and a half shooting these spectacular conditions in this utterly beautiful park. Available in the following sizes (Panorama B): 30x12, 40x16, 50x20, 60x24, 75x30, 75x30 Triptych (3 x 25x30), 90x36, 90x36 Triptych (3 x 30x36), 105x42, 105x42 Triptych (3 x 35x42), 120x48, 120x48 Triptych (3 x 40x48).
Sunstar at Zion Canyon Overlook
Utah is spectacular any time of the year, but to me, there's something special about snow in the desert. I think that the white of snow compliments blue skies and orange rocks perfectly. I took this photo as the sun was setting, from Zion Canyon Overlook, in Zion National Park, shortly after a good snowfall in southwest Utah, in February, 2019. Getting the “sunstar” seen in this photo involved a bit of technical know-how, but this photo would have worked even without it. The sunstar is really just the icing on the cake! Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48.
“The Wave,” in northern Arizona, was made famous by a Windows XP wallpaper many years ago. It subsequently became famous enough that, in order to keep the wilderness wild, the Bureau of Land Management decided to allow access to only twenty people per day, decided by a lottery. I'd wanted to visit “The Wave” for several years before I finally won a ticket to visit in late January, 2019. The entire region is spectacular, filled with otherworldly geologic formations and beautiful rocks in shades of pink, orange, red, and yellow. After finishing my visit to The Wave, I wasn't really in the mood to begin the 8-hour drive back to Scottsdale, where I was participating in an art show, so I decided to camp out close to the nearby Paria Townsite, just north of The Wave, and took this photo while the sun was low on the horizon, lighting this hill up beautifully. Available in the following sizes (Panorama D): 40x10, 48x12, 64x16, 80x20, 96x24, 96x24 Triptych (3 x 32x24), 120x30, 120x30 Triptych (3 x 40x30), 144x36 Triptych (3 x 48x36), 168x42 Triptych (3 x 56x42), 192x48 Triptych (3 x 64x48).
