Tennessee
Any guesses how Great Smoky Mountains National Park got its name? This picture offers some context. To the best of my knowledge, there were no wildfires burning anywhere nearby when I took this photo in the summer of 2016, but the ever-present haze in the area makes the mountains fade beautifully away into the distance. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, 30x45.
The landscape photography I do typically takes place at sunrise and sunset. Mid-day light isn't usually any good for creating dramatic scenes, but I do like to shoot wildlife and flowers in the middle of the day. I shot these thyme-leaved bluets in early summer, in Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30.
In the spring of 2016, I was traveling around the country, attending art shows. One weekend, I had a show in Florida, and the following weekend, I had a show in Detroit. This gave me several days to drive the roughly 1,000 miles I needed to cover, so with a day to spare, I decided to spend it in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. One day didn't provide adequate time to do everything I wanted to do, but it did allow me to take this picture of the beautiful Middle Prong Little River, in the heart of the Tennessee-side of the National Park. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48.
The landscape photography I do typically takes place at sunrise and sunset. Mid-day light isn't usually any good for creating dramatic scenes, but I do like to shoot wildlife and flowers in the middle of the day. I shot these pink primroses in early summer, in Tennessee's Cherokee National Forest. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30.
Reaching up to two inches in size, wolf spiders are one of the more frightening looking spiders in the United States, and while they are poisonous, they're also not aggressive, so one doesn't really need to worry about being bitten unless you are doing something silly – like deliberately provoking one. They live all over, and I frequently find them at night, which is when they do most of their hunting. If you walk around with a headlamp or flashlight, you may see little gem-like reflections on the ground. Upon closer inspection, you may find a wolf spider. The reflection is from their oversized eyes. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24.
The trail to Spruce Flats Falls is not one of the more popular hikes in Great Smoky Mountains National Park – in fact, it isn't even shown on the official park map. I was only made aware of it because I knew some people from the area who recommended the trail to me. The hike itself is moderate, and not terribly long, but well worth it. I saw the Falls in the autumn, after many leaves had fallen from the trees – those visible on the ground, but while many more leaves remained green, and on the branches of trees in the area. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, 30x45.
