South Dakota
I spent less than 24 hours in South Dakota's Badlands National Park during the summer of 2020. Badlands is most famous for its beautiful eroded buttes and pinnacles, but there's also a lot of wildlife to be found there. I came across a large group of bighorn sheep while visiting the area, and the babies all seemed to enjoy spending time together, as shown here. I had spectacular lighting at sunrise, but such lighting only lasts for a brief time. I took this photo during the last few minutes of sunrise while the horizontal rays of light still saturated the surrounding landscapes in shocking shades of orange and pink. SDMG (South Dakota Morning Glory)
I don't often go out looking for flowers to photograph, but I occasionally come across some while I have my macro lens and flash handy, and if the flower is pretty enough and the lighting good, I'll sometimes spend the time to get some macro photos. The use of a macro lens allowed me to make this flower look much larger than it actually is. This is a morning glory, and it was probably about the same size as a quarter. Just prior to visiting Badlands National Park, I'd spent a few days a hundred or so miles away in Custer State Park. While camping there, I saw a few of these mountain bluebirds, but wasn't able to get any decent shots of them. The vegetation and whatnot of Badlands is so different from Custer that I would never have imagined I'd see more of these beautiful birds at both locations, but as this photo proves, they can be found there, too! The sky was so overcast with clouds during sunset, that I almost gave up. Fortunately, I stuck around and was gifted about 2-3 minutes of direct light, just as the sun moved below the horizon. I was fortunate to have a view of some rolling hills and a small group of bison. I don't know why, but when I saw this image, the song “Home on the Range” came immediately to mind. When I visited the park in the summer of 2020, I was lucky enough to find a herd of bison grazing on the roadside grasses, and they weren't at all shy, thus allowing me to capture some fairly close-up shots of these majestic creatures. Occupying close to 400 square miles, it is filled with fascinating, sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires, and also boasts the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States. It is home to many animals, including the black-footed ferret, the most endangered land mammal in North America. I took this photo while here in the summer of 2012. Approximately twenty to thirty million bison used to roam the North American countryside, but today, although they are not in any danger of immediate extinction, they number only half a million. About 1,300 of these animals live in South Dakota's Custer State Park, which I visited in the summer of 2012, en route to Badlands National Park, just to the east.
