When the 2020 COVID-19 stay-at-home orders came to an end, I hopped in my van and made my way to Nevada. The emptiness of Nevada is something to behold. It's a strange feeling to drive along some of the loneliest highways on the planet, but it was while I was doing just this that I came across a herd of bighorn sheep. After visiting Great Basin National Park, my intention was to go to Lake Tahoe, but the sheer number of RVs on the road made it obvious that I wasn't the only one with this idea, and not wanting to be around so many people, I adjusted my plans and went instead to northwest Nevada's Black Rock Desert. It's a strange place – Burning Man is held here every year, and the overwhelming emptiness of the place can be overpowering. If you ever want to get away from everyone, you may want to put Black Rock Desert on your short list. The National Park is relatively small, and much of it was inaccessible due to snow while I was there, but there were still many good views to be found. I took this photo looking out of the park into the surrounding, hilly desert just before sunset, when the horizontal light cast long, dark shadows. At higher elevations, there was still a lot of snow, so many of the hiking trails were still relatively inaccessible. The Alpine Lakes Loop Trail was open, although snowy in many places, and it was on this hike that I photographed Stella Lake, and Wheeler Peak, shown here. But when I was passing through Las Vegas in the fall of 2019, I wanted to shoot the city from a non-traditional location. After looking at some maps of the region, I found “Exploration Peak Park,” which is located several miles southwest of downtown and allows for a good view of the city. I stopped at a ranger station in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada, for a recommendation on places to photograph during my drive through the area. The station turned out to be closed, but there was an attractive flower garden that provided me a bit of entertainment. These wild heliotropes were in full bloom when I was here, in mid-March, 2016. White Domes Sunrise Panorama 2
The first light of the day turns a portion of the White Domes, located at Valley of Fire State Park, in Nevada, a vibrant shade of orange. Although small, this State Park is well worth a visit. The Martian landscape stretches in all directions, and is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Mouse's Tank Road is a 6-mile scenic drive in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada, that takes one, ultimately, to the White Domes Area. The entire drive is beautiful, though, and provides many scenes like this one.
