The last day of my two-week Hawaiian photo journey in late 2018 was spent on Makalawena Beach, on the Big Island. It was an ideal way to finish up two fun weeks. It encapsulated the essence of what I'd traveled to Hawai'i to photograph more than anything else. It was a beautiful, blue-sky day, and I spent it on a nearly-deserted white sand beach, complete with palm trees, and turquoise water. I spent two weeks photographing four Hawaiian islands in December, 2018, and each of them had their perks. I'd been looking for an empty, palm-tree laden beach for the duration of my time in Hawai'i, and found several that were spectacular. It wasn't until my last day, however, that I found the exact scene I was looking for. Getting to Mahai'ula Beach involved a short, but very bumpy road, and perhaps this is why it wasn't as crowded as it may otherwise have been. Although I enjoy photographing flowers, I rarely go out of my way to do so. But when I came across this big, beautiful hibiscus while on the Big Island of Hawai'i in late 2018, I took the time to get a proper photo. I'm usually drawn to much more vividly-colored flowers than this nearly white hibiscus, but somehow, the pale, subdued colors really worked out in this photo. Green sea turtles are on the IUCN's endangered list, but you wouldn't guess that after spending time in Hawai'i. They're fairly easy to spot in the wild. Long-exposre seascape panoramas are difficult to capture because the movement of water doesn't always work well when stitching several photos together. If that sounded like a bunch of mumbo-jumbo, here's a translation: This was a deceptively difficult photo to take. But it is exactly what I was trying to capture: a beautiful, blue-sky day over an empty beach, with palm trees and turquoise waters. This is a photo to look at when feeling stressed out in order to help calm down. It was on one such drive that I found myself in the midst of an dense jungle, complete with a babbling brook. Talk about a peaceful spot! There are more than 90 eucalyptus tree species on Hawai'i, but I couldn't begin to guess which species these are. The simple pattern of repeated vertical lines in this photo, as well as a subdued two-color palate make for a simple but beautiful composition. The northeast corner of the Big Island of Hawai'i is utterly inaccessible to cars and all but the most daring of people. Nearly vertical cliffs of hundreds, maybe thousands of feet in height, plunge almost vertically into the turquoise waters below. It is possible to view these cliffs from either the Pololu Valley lookout, to the north, or from the Waipi'o Valley Lookout, to the south. They're both spectacular views. The Pololu Valley Lookout, on the northern end of the Big Island of Hawai'i, is a beautiful and popular spot for photography. I went there planning to shoot from the observation area, but quickly found that abundant underbrush would have eaten up the bottom portion of any photos of this spectacular coastline. So I went exploring, and found a good viewpoint a short distance up the road. The sunset didn't disappoint, and I love the simplicity of this piece. Mauna Kea, on the Big Island of Hawai'i, rises to just under 14,000 feet in elevation, and feels like another planet. At the top of the mountain lies the Mauna Kea Observatories, placed here because of the high elevation, lack of light pollution, low humidity, and other factors. I don't typically include much in the way of man-made stuff in my landscape photos, but the observatory shown here, painted in beautiful pinks and oranges by the setting sun, only enhances the image. Mauna Kea, on the Big Island of Hawai'i, rises to just under 14,000 feet in elevation, and feels like another planet. If you've ever looked at photos taken by NASA's Curiosity Rover of the surface of Mars, it looks quite a bit like this … just ignore the clouds. Interesting fact about the 13,803 foot high Mauna Kea: If measured from from its underwater base, it is the tallest mountain in the world, measuring 33,500 feet high. I drove to the top of Mauna Kea to watch the sunset in early December, 2018, and was thrilled to have an “overcast” evening in which to watch the sun set. Thrilled because, at the top of Mauna Kea, I was high above the clouds, and able to watch the sun set into clouds below. Quite an interesting experience. I think my favorite part of this particular photo is the shadow of Mauna Kea, itself, racing off into the distance. I'd hoped to get some wave photographs on Oahu's legendary North Shore, but when I visited there a week or so before I took this photo, the waves were quite small. But wandering a random beach on the Big Island allowed me to find a good vantage point from which to enjoy some crashing turquoise waves from the side.
