Night / Moon / Star Photos
I grew up in Colorado, and even lived in Denver for a short stint from 2006-2008, and yet, it took me until late 2018 to get a good photo of the beautiful city skyline. I took this photo on a fairly cold night in November, which helped to keep the air clear, and it was taken early enough in the evening that many of the office towers still had a fair number of interior lights on. The city has grown tremendously in the past couple decades, and it will be interesting to take another photo from the same location in another decade or so, and see how different the skyline looks then! Available in the following sizes (Panorama C): 30x10, 36x12, 48x16, 48x16 Triptych (3 x 16x16), 60x20, 60x20 Triptych (3 x 20x20), 72x24, 72x24 Triptych (3 x 24x24), 90x30, 90x30 Triptych (3 x 30x30), 108x36 Triptych (3 x 36x36), 126x42 Triptych (3 x 42x42), 144x48 Triptych (3 x 48x48).
Seattle is a nice place. It reminds me of my (kind of) hometown of Denver, Colorado... but with an ocean. I'd love to spend some more time there. I took this photo from Kerry Park while attending a show in the city. It's a popular lookout, and, with views like this, there's no wonder why. Available in the following sizes (Panorama C): 30x10, 36x12, 48x16, 48x16 Triptych (3 x 16x16), 60x20, 60x20 Triptych (3 x 20x20), 72x24, 72x24 Triptych (3 x 24x24), 90x30, 90x30 Triptych (3 x 30x30), 108x36 Triptych (3 x 36x36), 126x42 Triptych (3 x 42x42), 144x48 Triptych (3 x 48x48).
The skyline shot of Chicago that I've always wanted to capture, taken at the Adler Planetarium, in the summer of 2018. Available in the following sizes (Panorama B):30x12, 40x16, 50x20, 50x20 Triptych (3 x 17x20), 60x24, 60x24 Triptych (3 x 20x24), 75x30, 75x30 Triptych (3 x 25x30), 90x36, 90x36 Triptych (3 x 30x36), 105x42 Triptych (3 x 35x42), 120x48 Triptych (3 x 40x48).
Ancient Bristlecone Pine at Night
Ancient Bristlecone Pine trees, such as the one shown in this photo, are the longest-living (non-clonal) organisms on the planet. There is a tree in this forest that germinated in 3051 BC. They thrive in high alpine environments, and grow incredibly slowly. There's something magical about walking through a forest of trees that have been growing for literally thousands of years. I took this photo at night, and lit the tree using bounced light from a headlamp. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, 30x45, 40x60.
The Alabama Hills, which are part of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands, lie just to the east of the southern portion of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Many TV shows and movies have been filmed or had portions filmed here, including The Lone Ranger, Bonanza, Tremors, and Gladiator. It is also a popular camping spot, as made obvious by all the lights in the foreground of the photo. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40.
Alstrom Point, in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, in southern Utah, is isolated and beautiful. I camped here in late March, 2018, and I only saw one or two other people while I was here. Apparently, Lake Powell used to be much deeper, and, perhaps, it will be again one day. I'd love to return here and find the foreground of my photo completely submerged. Available in the following sizes (Panorama B): 30x12, 40x16, 50x20, 50x20 Triptych (3 x 17x20), 60x24, 60x24 Triptych (3 x 20x24), 75x30, 75x30 Triptych (3 x 25x30), 90x36, 90x36 Triptych (3 x 30x36), 105x42 Triptych (3 x 35x42), 120x48 Triptych (3 x 40x48).
I spent three months in Scottsdale, Arizona, in early 2018. That means I had three chances to get some photos of the full moon. This is a shot that I planned in advance, and am really happy with how well it turned out. The mountain in the foreground of this photo is Pinnacle Peak. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30.

I'd gone to Dyrholaey, outside of the village of Vik, in southern Iceland, in order to shoot the rising harvest moon, in early October, 2017. The sunset prior to the moonrise was great, and the moon itself was very pretty, but I primarily shot it, as I typically do, using a telephoto lens. On my way back to the car, though, after the moon had risen a fair bit over the horizon, I decided to do a more traditional, scenic landscape view. I liked what I was seeing, and played around a bit with different foregrounds and whatnot until I got this one that I really like. The moon – still orange from the sun which had set less than an hour before – was the primary source of light for this picture. Check out the shadow of the sea stack on the right, caused by the moon. Available in the following sizes: 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48
Aurora Borealis over Mountain Lake
It took me several compositions to get the shot I wanted here, of the Aurora Borealis lighting up the star-filled sky, and reflecting on the mountain lake and stream below. Although it looks like this was a cloud-free night, this was far from the case. To both the left and right of this frame, there were abundant clouds, so getting the composition and timing to work in tandem proved difficult, and took quite a bit of time. But with these kind of results, I can't really complain! Available in the following sizes: 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, 30x45, 40x60, 48x72
Northern Lights through Clouds
I was staying at a tiny hotel in the village of Dupavik, in Iceland's West Fjords on the night of September 22, 2017. After I'd completed my dinner, I went outside and happened to look up. Never before had I seen the Northern Lights, and this moment, the first time I ever saw them, is burned into my memory. I grabbed my camera gear and drove a couple miles in order to get rid of the artificial light from the hotel, and to find a better perspective, and what you see here is the result. Although I saw the Aurora Borealis on several more occasions before I came back home, the night that I saw them in Dupavik remains possibly my most memorable experience with them. Available in the following sizes: 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48
Iceland has a population of roughly 330,000 people, roughly 220,000 of whom live in the region of the capitol city of Reykjavik. The next biggest city has a population of roughly 17,000, and the rest of the 'urban areas' are, obviously, even smaller. I stayed in the village of Stykkisholmer (population 1,195), shown here, for two nights, and it proved to be quite similar to most of the villages around the country, albeit a bit prettier, thanks to the beautiful and nicely-maintained port. Available in the following sizes: 30x10, 36x12, 48x16, 48x16 Triptych (3 x 16x16), 60x20, 60x20 Triptych (3 x 20x20), 72x24, 72x24 Triptych (3 x 24x24), 90x30, 90x30 Triptych (3 x 30x30), 108x36 Triptych (3 x 36x36), 126x42 Triptych (3 x 42x42), 144x48 Triptych (3 x 48x48).
I had hoped to shoot the full moon on the evening of March 11, 2017, just as it rose above the horizon, but cloudy skies dictated that I rethink my plans. Fortunately, an hour or so later, there was still just enough ambient light to allow for a sharp image of the moon but with just a hint of blue sky in the background. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24.
I wasn't able to shoot the full moon immediately after it rose over the horizon on the evening of March 11, 2017, because clouds obstructed the view. However, fifteen minutes later, the moon found a nice gap in the clouds and made an appearance over the Atlantic Ocean. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30.
Crescent Moon Over Naples Pier
I visited Naples Pier on February 28, 2017, with the intention of getting some shots of the crescent moon over this beautiful structure. Of all the shots I got that include both the pier and the moon, this one is my favorite. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, 30x45, 40x60, 48x72.
The night of November 13, 2016, was the biggest “supermoon” visible on Earth for over 60 years. I was busy on the evening of the 14th, but managed to get this shot of a nearly-full moon above some palm trees two nights before, from an art show I was participating in, in Fountain Hills, Arizona. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle A): 10x8, 14x11, 20x16, 24x20, 30x24.
Photographing old windmills is harder than one would think, since they are frequently hard to get to – they're often on private land – and when they can be reached, the background is often less than spectacular. I found this windmill in northern Colorado's Pawnee National Grassland, and thought that the combination of the glowing horizon, the moving clouds, and the dozen or so visible stars in the sky created a wonderful shot. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, 30x45.
