I've always wanted to shoot the Appalachian and other eastern-US mountain ranges in the fall, when many of these areas are famous for the fall foliage. I finally had my chance in mid-October, 2022. It did not disappoint. Next up, I'll have to venture a bit further north, up into Vermont and New Hampshire! Considering how many times I've been to Washington DC and the surrounding suburbs, it's fairly surprising that it took me until 2021 to make it to Great Falls Park, in Fairfax County, northern Virginia. A National Park Service site (but not technically a National Park), Great Falls Park is only 800 acres along the banks of the Potomac River, and aside from how easy to reach and beautiful it is, it also has some interesting history, as do so many things in this part of the country. Look it up! There are a lot of trails in the park, including the 3.3-mile roundtrip hike to beautiful Doyles River Falls. I've seen photos of these falls with a lot more water flowing, and high water volume is often great for photography, but there wasn't a ton of water flowing when I took this one, which meant it was fairly easy to wander out into the river to get a better vantage point without getting washed away. I'm sure this road can be unbearably busy in the wrong seasons, but on this visit, I felt like I had the park to myself, and was all alone on one of the overlooks (don't ask which one!) when I got this photo. There are a lot of trails in the park, including the short hike to one of the most visited waterfalls in the park – Dark Hollow Falls. It's very easy to get to, and for that reason, taking photos of it can be a bit difficult – there are often people blocking the shot. There are a lot of trails in the park, and one of the good ones is to Overrun Falls, the highest waterfall in Shenandoah. This photo is of Upper Overrun Falls, which is about a quarter mile upstream of the 93-foot Overrun Falls. Often times, smaller waterfalls are more photogenic than larger ones, and this turned out to be the case, at least for my photographs of the falls. Although the mountains of the Eastern United States aren't as monumental as those in the western states, like the Rockies in my home state of Colorado, there is an unmistakable beauty in the lush greens that extend from the top to the bottom of all the mountains in the area. I took this photo during a 3-month trip through Eastern Canada and the Eastern United States. Throughout the trip, there were several good sunrises, but until this evening, the sunsets I'd seen had been, for the most part, fairly forgettable. This evening, I was driving along Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive and was treated to some of the most vivid clouds I'd seen before. A three-quarters full moon happened to be in just the right place at just the right time for me to get this photo.
