Lakes and Rivers
I had a few days on the Kancamagus Highway in the fall of 2022, and was hoping to get some shots of the autumn leaves that the area is famous for. Unfortunately, I was a couple weeks early. It was still worth seeing, but I'm going to have to return another year and hope for better timing. Photographically, it wasn't a complete waste, I did get this shot of the insanely accessible Lower Falls. Available in the following sizes (Panorama A): 20x10, 24x12, 32x16, 40x20, 48x24, 60x30, 60x30 Triptych (3 x 20x30), 72x36, 72x36 Triptych (3 x 24x36), 80x40, 80x40 Triptych (3 x 27x40), 96x48, 96x48 Triptych (3 x 32x48), 108x54, 108x54 Triptych (3 x 36x54), 120x60, 120x60 Triptych (3 x 40x60).
Whenever I am a within a few hours of Door County, Wisconsin, with a few days to spare and nothing else planned, I'll head that way. It is a great place to camp, ride around on a motorcycle, eat good food at quaint restaurants, and enjoy the scenery. That's exactly what brought me to Cave Point, on the east side of Door County, in the late summer of 2022. I was there on a perfectly blue sky day, which isn't typically great for photography, but it was actually perfect for this photo, since the sky above made the blue waters of Lake Michigan somehow even more blue. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, 30x45, 40x60, 48x72.

I'd visited Glacier National Park, in northern Montana, many times prior to my Summer, 2022 visit. All these visits, however, had been limited to the “main” part of the Park – Going to the Sun Road, and the areas immediately around this spectacular drive. Because of increased visitation, Glacier instituted a “permits only” entrance policy for Going to the Sun Road, and the surrounding, most-popular portion of the park in 2021. Without a permit (I'm notoriously bad at planning far in advance), I decided to visit Two Medicine Lake, in southeast Glacier – one of the other parts of the park that does not require an entry permit. I camped practically on the shore of Two Medicine Lake, and snapped this photo, along with many other beautiful compositions of this lake, on a morning with an absolutely perfect sunrise. I truly don't know that I've ever gotten so many great photos in such a short time. There are a million options for composition here, and you'd be hard pressed to take a bad photo at a place like this with similar conditions. Available in the following sizes (Panorama B): 30x10, 36x12, 48x16, 60x20, 72x24, 90x30, 90x30 Triptych (3 x 30x30), 108x36, 108x36 Triptych (3 x 36x36), 120x40, 120x40 Triptych Triptych (3 x 40x40), 144x48 Triptych (3 x 48x48), 162x54 Triptych (3 x 54x54), 180x60 Triptych (3 x 60x60).

During a week between art shows in Wyoming and Montana, I decided to visit a place I'd never been before – Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, less than a hundred miles east of Yellowstone National Park, on the Wyoming / Montana border. The scenery here was much more reminiscent of the American Southwest than what I think of when I visualize Wyoming or Montana. It was a refreshing change of pace, and the crowds here were minuscule compared to what I've come to expect in the more popular National Parks in this part of the country. This view is somewhat similar to Horseshoe Bend (in northern Arizona) or Dead Horse Point (eastern Utah), but what makes this viewpoint different is that on the left side of the photo, you can see that this bend takes place where two rivers (Porcupine Creek and Bighorn River) converge before continuing downstream as the Bighorn River. Oh, and there are wild horses all over this area! Available in the following sizes (Panorama A): 20x10, 24x12, 32x16, 40x20, 48x24, 60x30, 60x30 Triptych (3 x 20x30), 72x36, 72x36 Triptych (3 x 24x36), 80x40, 80x40 Triptych (3 x 27x40), 96x48, 96x48 Triptych (3 x 32x48), 108x54, 108x54 Triptych (3 x 36x54), 120x60, 120x60 Triptych (3 x 40x60).
Considering how many times I've been to Washington DC and the surrounding suburbs, it's fairly surprising that it took me until 2021 to make it to Great Falls Park, in Fairfax County, northern Virginia. A National Park Service site (but not technically a National Park), Great Falls Park is only 800 acres along the banks of the Potomac River, and aside from how easy to reach and beautiful it is, it also has some interesting history, as do so many things in this part of the country. Look it up! Available in the following sizes (Panorama B): 30x12, 40x16, 50x20, 60x24, 75x30, 75x30 Triptych (3 x 25x30), 90x36, 90x36 Triptych (3 x 30x36), 105x42, 105x42 Triptych (3 x 35x42), 120x48, 120x48 Triptych (3 x 40x48), 135x54 Triptych (3 x 45x54), 150x60 Triptych (3 x 50x60).

I'd never heard of Piney Lake, even though I grew up in Colorado, until I appeared at an art show in Avon, and had several people recommend I go there to take some photos. So I did just that. Having now seen and photographed it myself, I can fully understand the recommendations! What a great semi-secret spot! Available in the following sizes (Panorama B): 30x12, 40x16, 50x20, 60x24, 75x30, 75x30 Triptych (3 x 25x30), 90x36, 90x36 Triptych (3 x 30x36), 105x42, 105x42 Triptych (3 x 35x42), 120x48, 120x48 Triptych (3 x 40x48), 135x54 Triptych (3 x 45x54), 150x60 Triptych (3 x 50x60).

I usually try to find free places to camp as I travel around the country to go to art shows. I'd picked Rice Lake, Iowa out, because I'd read it was a nice place to camp, and it was right along my route. I had no idea if it would be worth photographing, but when I arrived, I realized that if the sunset was good, I could probably get a nice shot. Sometimes a little luck is all you need, and I certainly received my fair share on the evening I took this photo. The clouds were beautiful, and the water was very still – a perfect combination for a good sunset photo. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48.
Temperance River State Park, on the North Shore of Lake Superior, is a small but beautiful park along Lake Superior's north shore. Perhaps the highlight of the park is Temperance River Falls. I photographed these falls, but was surprised to see that my preferred photos were taken a couple hundred feet downstream, where the river enters Lake Superior. This photo, to me, epitomizes the subtle beauty of Lake Superior's North Shore. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48.
Horseshoe Bay, which lies about 20 miles southwest of the Canadian border on Minnesota 61, looks much like any number of small bays along the north shore of Lake Superior. The waves were small when I visited in the summer of 2021, but the water was not nearly still enough for me to get a mirror-like reflection. Lacking this option, I put a neutral density filter (basically sunglasses for a lens) on my camera, which allowed me to take a “long exposure” of the scene, which gives the water the somewhat “ghostly” look that can be seen in this photo. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30, 60x40, 72x48, 80x54, 90x60.
A mere 3.5 miles from the Canadian Border along Minnesota 61, which runs along Lake Superior's beautiful North Shore, lies Wayswaugoing Bay Overlook, a small pull off that one could easily drive by without giving it a second thought. But when I visited, I was trying to take things slow, and enjoy all the sights I could. Fortunately, I found myself at this viewpoint shortly before sunset, on a day with some of the best clouds I could have hoped for, the stop proved to be a good one. It's a beautiful area, in general, and one of the most accessible places I know of that leaves one feeling a sense of solitude that is increasingly difficult to find in the modern world. Available in the following sizes (Panorama C): 30x10, 36x12, 48x16, 60x20, 72x24, 90x30, 90x30 Triptych (3 x 30x30), 108x36, 108x36 Triptych (3 x 36x36), 120x40, 120x40 Triptych Triptych (3 x 40x40), 144x48 Triptych (3 x 48x48), 162x54 Triptych (3 x 54x54), 180x60 Triptych (3 x 60x60).

I've shot a decent number of photos in Wisconsin, but prior to 2021, they were all in either Door County, or Milwaukee. I decided to branch out and see a bit more of what this state has to offer in the summer of 2021. In my research, I came across some photos of Willow Falls, in far west Wisconsin, and figured it was worth a visit. Suffice to say, I was extraordinarily happy with my choice, as these waterfalls are quite beautiful. I took this photo with the sun setting behind me, which made taking a long-exposure easy, and the orange sky to the west added a bit of saturation to the orange rocks that surround the falls. It's easily accessible and unique.
