By 2022, I'd shot most of the big, famous photo locations throughout Utah. But there is so much beautiful public land in this spectacular state, that it would take a lifetime to see everything. I was driving through in the spring of 2022, and wanted to explore some less well-known locations. I'd seen photos online of “Zebra Slot,” and after some quick research, off I went, in the middle of the day, to check it out. Pro tip: landscapes generally look their best (or at least most dramatic) at sunrise and / or sunset, but canyons – and slot canyons especially – look best in the middle of the day. The scale of the canyon is a bit difficult to make out from this photo, but I'll say that I'm glad I am pretty thin. Getting to the end of the slot required me to turn sideways and shimmy along, scraping my tripod and cameras on the rock walls along the way. But it was all worth it, because I simply love the photos I got here. One of the lesser-known temples near Chiang Rai, Thailand, is Wat Tham Phra, or the Buddha Cave Temple. I hadn't even heard of it, but found it by accident when driving around the area on my rented scooter in early 2020. I love finding places like this by accident! The “Marble Caves,” located on General Carrera Lake in Chilean Patagonia, are accessible only by boat, and I believe motorized boat traffic is restricted in some way. At least, I didn't see any power boats cruising around when I kayaked to the Marble Caves. And they remain something of a secret spot – as of mid-2020, the “Marble Caves” don't have a Wikipedia entry! Some of this has to do with how remote and inaccessible they are. But if you ever find yourself near Chile Chico, on the Argentina / Chile border in Patagonia, do yourself a favor and check them out! Truly a sight to behold! I'd been hoping to hike to “The Subway,” which lies in the heart of Southwest Utah's Zion National Park, for about a decade before I was finally able to pull it off on April 18, 2017. A special back-country permit is required to hike here, but the mild annoyance of dealing with this, and the difficulty of the hike itself – I would be lying if I said the hike was anything other than difficult – proved to be completely worth it when I finally reached this unbelievable, natural formation. Obviously named because of the shape of the canyon itself, “The Subway” simply must be seen to be believed. It lies just to the north of Zion National Park, and is a great way to spend some time in the area, particularly if one is sick of dealing with the crowds at this beautiful, but sometimes annoyingly crowded gem of a National Park. Although I typically try to avoid having man-made stuff in my photos, I like the rustic look of this ladder – I really think that without it, this photo would be far less unique. The hike to reach Kanarraville Falls is a medium-length, medium-difficulty hike along a riverbed that eventually turns into a slot canyon. There are almost 100,000 glaciers in Alaska, and most of them aren't named. Most are inaccessible, but some – like the Worthington Glacier, located on the Richardson Highway, which runs from Glennallen to Valdez – are on the side of the road, and easily reached on foot. I walked up to this glacier during my summer, 2016 visit to the largest state in America, and carefully made my way to its terminus (the end of the glacier). From there, I was able to look into the ice cave that had formed here, although I didn't dare go any further. Perhaps another time. But for now, I'll settle for this beautiful shot of one of these rapidly retreating natural wonders.
