2020 Art Show Photos
Although I live in Colorado, it is a 5 hour drive from my home town to the beautiful, mountain town of Aspen. I participated in an Art Festival in Aspen, Colorado, in July, 2017, and made sure to arrive a day or two early in order to do some photography in the area. There are thick stands of aspen all around the appropriately named city, including this spectacular stand of old trees that grew so thick it was difficult to see through the forest. Available in the following sizes (Panorama B): 30x12, 40x16, 50x20, 60x24, 75x30, 75x30 Triptych (3 x 25x30), 90x36, 90x36 Triptych (3 x 30x36), 105x42, 105x42 Triptych (3 x 35x42), 120x48, 120x48 Triptych (3 x 40x48).
I was camping in Yellowstone National Park, roughly two and a half hours from Oxbow Bend, on the night of September 20, 2016. I'd called Jackson's (the closest city to Grand Teton National Park) Chamber of Commerce, trying to figure out if the colors of the trees in the National Park were at their peak yet, because I didn't want to miss the one to three day window during which the aspen in the park are at their absolute best. They told me I'd better come as soon as possible, so I got up at 3:45 on the morning of the 21st in order to be at Oxbow Bend before sunrise. In my opinion, this photo may be the best landscape photo I've ever taken. Available in the following sizes (Panorama B): 30x12, 40x16, 50x20, 60x24, 75x30, 75x30 Triptych (3 x 25x30), 90x36, 90x36 Triptych (3 x 30x36), 105x42, 105x42 Triptych (3 x 35x42), 120x48, 120x48 Triptych (3 x 40x48), 135x54 Triptych (3 x 45x54), 150x60 Triptych (3 x 50x60).
I'd been hoping to hike to “The Subway,” which lies in the heart of Southwest Utah's Zion National Park, for about a decade before I was finally able to pull it off on April 18, 2017. A special back-country permit is required to hike here, but the mild annoyance of dealing with this, and the difficulty of the hike itself – I would be lying if I said the hike was anything other than difficult – proved to be completely worth it when I finally reached this unbelievable, natural formation. Obviously named because of the shape of the canyon itself, “The Subway” simply must be seen to be believed. Available in the following sizes (Panorama A): 20x10, 24x12, 32x16, 40x20, 48x24, 60x30, 60x30 Triptych (3 x 20x30), 72x36, 72x36 Triptych (3 x 24x36), 80x40, 80x40 Triptych (3 x 27x40), 96x48, 96x48 Triptych (3 x 32x48), 108x54, 108x54 Triptych (3 x 36x54), 120x60, 120x60 Triptych (3 x 40x60).
The hike to reach Kanarraville Falls is a medium-length, medium-difficulty hike along a riverbed that eventually turns into a slot canyon. It lies just to the north of Zion National Park, and is a great way to spend some time in the area, particularly if one is sick of dealing with the crowds at this beautiful, but sometimes annoyingly crowded gem of a National Park. Although I typically try to avoid having man-made stuff in my photos, I like the rustic look of this ladder – I really think that without it, this photo would be far less unique. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle A): 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 20x24, 24x30, 30x40, 40x50, 48x60, 60x75.
Capitol Reef gets about half the visitors each year as Arches or Bryce Canyon, due largely to its remote location. For this reason, it is one of my favorite National Parks in Utah – and that is really saying something. I got this shot in the middle of a trip through all of Utah's National Parks, and the weather looked equally intimidating for most of my trip. I got lucky, though, and it only really unleashed any rain on me for a couple hours just after I took this photo. The enormous cliffs that make up the background of this photo are part of a much larger up-thrust called the Waterpocket Fold. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30.
I've visited Bryce Canyon National Park many times, and I always go to Bryce Point for sunrise. Although I've gotten good shots of it in the past, everything seemed to work out perfectly on a March morning in 2016, when I got this shot that included a bit of snow, enough direct light to illuminate the hoodoos perfectly, and just the right number of clouds in the sky to provide an ideal sunrise. Available in the following sizes (Panorama B): 30x12, 40x16, 50x20, 60x24, 75x30, 75x30 Triptych (3 x 25x30), 90x36, 90x36 Triptych (3 x 30x36), 105x42, 105x42 Triptych (3 x 35x42), 120x48, 120x48 Triptych (3 x 40x48).
Big Bend National Park, in the southwest corner of Texas, is larger than the State of Rhode Island, and has three distinct ecosystems: wasteland (the Chihuahuan Desert), mountain (the Chisos Mountains), and river (the Rio Grande). I took this photo of “The Window,” one of the more well-known viewpoints in the Chisos Mountains. Available in the following sizes (Panorama C): 30x10, 36x12, 48x16, 60x20, 72x24, 90x30, 90x30 Triptych (3 x 30x30), 108x36, 108x36 Triptych (3 x 36x36), 120x40, 120x40 Triptych (3 x 40x40).
Every time I visit Glacier National Park, in northern Montana, I make it a priority to get to the Wild Goose Island viewpoint at sunrise and / or sunset. And when the mountains light up, it is worth it, every time. Available in the following sizes (Panorama C): 30x10, 36x12, 48x16, 60x20, 72x24, 90x30, 90x30 Triptych (3 x 30x30), 108x36, 108x36 Triptych (3 x 36x36), 120x40, 120x40 Triptych (3 x 40x40).
Of Kenya's “Big Five” (lion, elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, and cape buffalo), the leopard is generally the hardest to spot. I was lucky on my trip to Masai Mara National Reserve, because I saw one on my first day of safari. My driver spotted this leopard sleeping in a tree in the morning. We watched him for a while, and eventually gave up hoping that he would actually do anything more entertaining than lie around. When we returned to the same tree later that evening, guess who was exactly where we'd left him? Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, 30x45.
Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive is a beautiful road through the forested mountains of the Shenandoah Range, in northern Virginia. Although the mountains of the Eastern United States aren't as monumental as those in the western states, like the Rockies in my home state of Colorado, there is an unmistakable beauty in the lush greens that extend from the top to the bottom of all the mountains in the area. Available in the following sizes (Panorama C): 30x10, 36x12, 48x16, 60x20, 72x24, 90x30, 90x30 Triptych (3 x 30x30), 108x36, 108x36 Triptych (3 x 36x36), 120x40, 120x40 Triptych (3 x 40x40).
Red pandas are among my favorite animals on the planet. They are undoubtedly one of the cutest, and if you haven't ever seen them play before, I highly recommend you dedicate at least a few minutes to a Youtube search for “Red Panda,” or something similar. This is actually one of my earliest shots that I consider to be of high enough quality to justify putting on my site. Available in the following sizes (Square): 10x10, 12x12, 16x16.
A pika. These furry little critters are among my favorite animals to photograph. They tend to live in rocky mountain sides at high elevations, and can be spotted fairly easily by simply waiting patiently in their habitat, or by listening for their characteristic squeak. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle A): 10x8, 14x11, 20x16.
Kebler Pass, which runs west from Crested Butte, Colorado, through Gunnison National Forest, is a (mostly) gravel road that, because of its elevation, is closed in the winters. In the summer, however, it is accessible by any vehicle, and allows those who are interested the opportunity to see some of Colorado's most beautiful aspen groves, such as the one shown in this photo. Available in the following sizes (Square): 10x10, 12x12, 16x16, 20x20, 24x24, 30x30.
This is one of my favorite pictures I've ever taken. I found this fox kit and his sibling playing together in a field of wildflowers while camping near Crested Butte, Colorado. Mama wasn't far off, but wasn't willing to get as close to humans as her young. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle A): 10x8, 14x11, 20x16.
I rarely break out a long lens for landscape photography, and I equally rarely convert to black and white, but this photo is an example of where each of these ideas seemed to work out quite well. When I took this photo, the landscape was engulfed in clouds, and traditional, grand scenic shots weren't really in the cards. This closeup of a mountainside forest just outside of Crested Butte, Colorado, however, managed to succeed as a more abstract shot than I typically shoot. Available in the following sizes (Square): 10x10, 12x12, 16x16, 20x20, 24x24, 30x30, 36x36.
McWay Falls, which lies directly off Highway One, in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, on the central California coast, is magnificent. Before a 1983 fire and a 1985 landslide, 80-foot tall McWay Falls plunged directly into the Pacific Ocean, but now this only happens at high tide. This scene was actually difficult to shoot, because of the sensory overload brought about by so many beautiful sights in one scene – a waterfall, a beach, a rocky cove, and sunset light. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle B): 12x8, 18x12, 24x16, 30x20, 36x24, 45x30.
Esperance, Western Australia, is home to some of the most beautiful beaches and coastline I've ever seen. Twilight Beach is the most famous of the white-sand beaches within a few minutes of Esperance, but I preferred Blue Haven. This picture is wonderfully representative of the coastline in the area for miles in any direction. The remoteness of Esperance (it's roughly an 8 hour drive from Perth, the only city of more than 70,000 people in Western Australia) means that visitors can easily find solitude. Visiting a similar coastline in Southern California, or for that matter, the East Coast of Australia, would not be nearly as peaceful of an experience. Available in the following sizes (Rectangle A): 10x8, 14x11, 20x16, 24x20, 30x24.
