I'm from Colorado, and I travel quite a bit in the American West, so I see bald eagles from time to time, but nothing like while traveling in Alaska. They're all over the place. The pair in this photo built a massive nest near the middle of town in Homer, Alaska, many years ago. Apparently, they've been returning to the same spot for years. Their earlier nest eventually grew so big that the tree it was in could no longer handle the weight, and it collapsed. The pair persevered, though, and built a new nest very close by. The day I took this photo was expected by many residents to be the first day the young eagles tried to fly for the first time.
