This is a view of Grand Prismatic Spring, in Yellowstone National Park, that not many people experience. Visible in this photo is a walkway that allows visitors to see portions of the spring from up-close, but viewing it from the walkway doesn't really allow one to imagine what it looks like as a whole. To see this view, you have to do a bit more walking, and, in all likelihood, you'll have to deal with some mosquitoes. Grand Prismatic Spring – the largest hot spring in the United States, and the third largest in the world – is almost otherworldly vibrant. The colors are caused by single-cell organisms that can grow along the edges of the spring. There are none in the center, since the water is too hot for such forms of life.
